Power Platform community conference 2024 Notes

Hey All,

It looks like we have some new additions to the Power Platform per the conference wrapping up last week. Rest assured, below are the now public updates that I have so laboriously pasted for you today. As I get more experience with the new tech, I will share it. So be sure to follow the site, so you don’t miss out! If what you find is helpful, please share as a token of your appreciation.

Power Platform Growth

  • The Power Platform has reached over 48 million monthly active users, an increase of 8 million.
  • Charles Lamanna, CVP at Microsoft, highlighted the community’s growth, with over 5.8 million members and a question answered every six minutes.

COE Updates

It’s an ideal time to install or update your Center of Excellence (COE) Kit, as Microsoft has recently made significant enhancements, including:

  • Dataverse Capacity Tracking: New dashboard tabs to monitor Dataverse capacity.
  • Power Pages Insights: Quickly view Power Pages details within your tenant.
  • Improved Audit Logs: Now utilizing a Microsoft Graph connector for straightforward setup and enhanced data retrieval on app usage.
  • Simplified Permission Management: Manage permissions for all Power Apps and Power Automate flows in a single model-driven app, eliminating the need for separate canvas apps.

These updates aim to streamline COE Kit management for your Power Platform environment, reducing complexity and uncertainty.

A few notes on COE Governance,

One thing that sticks out to me here, the Microsoft Forms app is very popular for my end users and there is no governance dashboard so LOTS of tickets come in my queue where an end user has configured a mission critical intake form to be tied to their personal account. And when they leave the company, the form built on MS forms no longer works. Therefore the process breaks causing business interruptions for many. That is not the case for the Power Apps forms. The learning curve is higher for Power Apps forms, but I can force compliance if I were to use this as my enterprise form standard.

Power Automate Updates

  • Pinned Actions: You can now pin up to two details (triggers/actions) side by side to avoid switching between windows.
    • Note, this is useful if you want to compare functions.
  • Co-pilot: Co-pilot for Power Automate is enhanced with multimodal recording, allowing users to record actions and give voice instructions.
  • Generative AI Actions: AI can now automate complex conditions, building flow logic automatically based on user input.
    • Note, I personally struggle with grouping odata queries. I wonder if AI can help.

Power Apps Updates

  • Co-authoring: Now generally available, allowing real-time collaboration on Power Apps.
  • Model-Driven Apps: New Co-pilot feature extracts information from free text (e.g., emails) and inputs it into apps automatically.
  • Power Apps Plan Designer: Helps plan solutions by processing pre-existing documents and generating the structure for multiple apps within a solution.
    • Note, I am personally using this to replace legacy Macro or VB script based forms on Excel and Word documents. More security for everyone!
