Responsible AI considerations | Should my app be able to plagiarize, and replace humans?

Hey All,

My initial intent with app development started out simple, I wanted to automate the boring things so I can focus on higher value work. I get a pure joy out of working smarter and love to share my creations with others. Who doesn’t love more free time?

But now we are in a entirely new age. Specifically, the AI era. And when I start swinging the metaphorical hammer within the app development realm, I start to discover ethical considerations that can cause one to pause. Even if I follow the right guidelines in my building of the widget, how do I know what I create will be used fairly?

For example, Let’s say I developed a feature that can extract information from a webpage. It’s crucial to ensure that it’s used responsibly and doesn’t infringe on the content creator’s privacy or copyright laws. So now I need to be an expert on strict guidelines for data usage, ensuring transparency about how any AI process my app utilizes handles information. But it gets darker…

I have to think about the potential impact with technology on jobs and society. Just because I can, do I create solutions that augment or replace human capabilities? Answers to these questions are not always clear. But we are not alone, and that is why I am writing this post today.

Last week on my roundup, I shared a nifty piece of documentation titled, Power Platform Well-Architected assessment. And there is a particular section I want to highlight today titled, Responsible AI. Below is a brief outline of the content that has really helped guide me in this new world of AI development. Enjoy!

  • Intelligent application workloads should follow responsible AI principles, including fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethical behavior.
  • Microsoft has made significant investments to prevent abuse and unintended harm in generative models, such as incorporating their principles for responsible AI use and building content filters.
  • Power Platform copilots and generative AI features follow Microsoft’s Responsible AI Standard and are protected by comprehensive compliance, security, and privacy controls.
